Sitting alone in a corner seat in a train, on a long multiday journey through a strange land, glancing out the window from time to time, making notes on the endpapers (“Man in conical hat chasing a pig. . . . ”; “Market women hawking monkey paws. . . . ”), and at mealtime continuing my reading in the dining car, then at night in my berth, rocking and reading by the little light behind my head.
I can vividly imagine how lovely it must be to spend a day like this reading, taking in the surrounding. Smoothing yet awed by the constantly changing landscape.
