First lines: they convey voice, tone, mood; they set up a story; they pique curiosity in readers and listeners. Writers put in tremendous effort to make a big impact with this small space. Openings shares great first lines.
The first lines are supposed to grab the reader’s attention. If the first few paragraphs didn’t get me hooked, chances are I won’t be reading it. The first few statements set the tone, give the story its character and they can really leave a deep impression on the readers.
I appreciate good beginnings as much as powerful endings. This is one site I see myself revisiting in the future to explore some of the treasures I may have missed or overlooked.
